Flooded in Doubt

In September 2006, I reported from New Orleans with a photographer and TV reporter on the recovery of the city after Hurricane Katrina and the ensuing flood. I kept a blog during the trip, wrote a longer narrative upon my return and coordinated a multimedia package. doc mp3 blog

Villagers Say Forced To Join Army

Based on tips we got from human rights activists, a colleague and I traveled to a remote village near the Thai border, where villagers told us they had been picked by lottery and forced to join the Cambodian army to defend their home districts in a border dispute with Thailand. doc

Acceptance or Exclusion?

This feature explores the experience of gays who were raised Catholic but left the church because of its stance on homosexuality, and examines a document that had just been issued by Catholic bishops calling for more acceptance. This story earned me a national first place for feature writing in the 2006 Mark of Excellence Awards. doc

Gov. Blunt sued over canceled contracts

An example of a breaking news story. I was working as an editor at the time, but one night a writer was needed so I switched hats. This story is about a lawsuit filed against Missouri’s governor, a part of a larger debate on the liability of people who hire undocumented workers. Initially published online and in the paper the next day, my story was the first in the state. AP and competing newspapers picked it up later. doc
