Writing, schmiting

with 4 comments

The unsteady pile of books atop the dresser in my childhood bedroom, where I write these lines, is an all-too-obvious example of the importance of good writing.
At the bottom of the edifice, the last Goncourt prize – on this rare occasion, won by an American – which will likely remain unopened; it was passed on to me after two family members gave up on it, and I have learned to trust their judgment. Above it, three non-fiction books about the history, the bad stuff and the good stuff – in that particular order – going on in Africa. An old receipt has marked the same page for weeks in the first one; the other two were never opened. Finally, one more much-publicised book that I found so pedantic I couldn’t get past a third of what is a rather thin paperback, and on top a Spanish dictionary, for good measure in my new job.
To the right of the dresser, my nightstand. On it, a 607-page brightly colored hardback whose murder all the other children’s books must be plotting. I read it in the past 24 hours, cover to cover, with short sleeping breaks when my sanity was threatened. Still, Harry Potter, still, you say? Well… yes, she says with an apologetic smile. But only to make a point: write well. Take the reader and don’t let them go. Make an 11 year-old read seven thick hardbacks in under a month. Read the rest of this entry »

Viva el scanner

Check out what I just wrote and posted on the Sentinel’s Web site. Finally some breaking news, which is exactly what I wanted from my internship.
I’ve done my fair share of features, and I daresay I’m pretty good at them. What I wanted from my internship was daily “down in the mud” experience. Imagine how disappointed I was when all I got in Watsonville was fluff features. Gimme news! Gimme a flap jacket and a notebook in Baghdad! Ok I’m pushing it. Read the rest of this entry »

That’s a sigh of relief. It took me about four hours to put this together. It’s my blog’s portfolio page, which you can access anytime by clicking on the “Portfolio” link two columns to your right.
That’s where you should go if you’re interested in reading my latest story at the Sentinel. I’ll make sure to update it every time I publish. Unless the story’s mind-blowing, I probably won’t write about it here.
If you’re curious to know just how long I’ve been a J junkie, you should probably check out the page, too.

Wow, 38 viewings in one day! That’s about 38 times my previous record. You guys like me. I’ll keep writing then. Read the rest of this entry »

Kudos to the Watsonville Police Department

I was assigned one day last week, some time around 5 p.m., to cover the (sad) story of a woman who was pushed out the window in a domestic dispute. I called Deputy Chief Kim Austin, and not only was she very pleasant and fun, she was also the most helpful cop I have met so far in my young journalistic careeer. Read the rest of this entry »

Let’s catch up

I’ve been at the Santa Cruz Sentinel for two weeks now. I got there terrified I would screw up, but I haven’t yet (or at least, they didn’t tell me.) I’m working in a bureau in Watsonville, south of Santa Cruz county, a town that is 75% Latino, many of them migrant workers in the fields of strawberry and other amazing California crops. Goal #1: I really have got to learn Spanish.

So far, I’m the feature girl. I have written several, but none yet that I’m so proud of that I’d link to it here. Ok, I’ll give you this one just because I had a lot of fun doing it. Of course, it was very popular on the Web site since it has naked ladies.

I am hungry for something a little more meaty, so I’m looking for my own stories but it’s really hard when you don’t have an assigned beat and you don’t want to tread on other people’s beats.

In no particular order, here are a few things I’ve learned on my first couple weeks on the job. Read the rest of this entry »
