The tribulations of a young journalist and writer looking for work

Slow Robert

I am starting at the Santa Cruz office Monday morning. I’m excited to be moving to a busier newsroom. My Watsonville coworkers were nice, but it was too quiet for my taste. I yearn for the sound of police scanners beeping, 300 fingers typing and yells of “What’s our style on Lulu’s?” as deadline nears.

Now would be a good time to introduce you to my readership. Santa Cruz is a university town much like Columbia with local coffee houses fighting Starbucks and a disproportionate population of 18-22 year olds. But Santa Cruz is in “the Bay”, and that makes all the difference. Santa Cruz is a haven of liberalism amidst even more liberalism. Nobody’s weird in SC, not even Slow Robert, who walks up and down Pacific Avenue all day as slow as possible, a human reminder of the local Banana Slugs. These people also like their pot, and they’re not afraid to show it: last week, I got asked out for coffee and a joint, apparently the local version of dinner and a movie.

The cost of life is through the roof, which means journalists are paupers here more than anywhere. But there’s a Trader Joe’s two blocks from the paper, so anything’s forgiven.
