The tribulations of a young journalist and writer looking for work

Neon lights and fake ficus

Sorry for the hiatus. I took a sick leave but returned to the office today. If this internship has taught me anything, it is the power of interior design. There is more depressing in our office than the pending release of the names of those laid off. It’s the cheap stucco walls, the cubicles – some shade of blue that somehow manages to look colorless – and the 1998 box computers that all face away from the two windows with view of the city parking garage on the rare days the plastic blinds are up. Insert neon ceiling lights and plastic ficus. You can’t make that stuff up.
Speaking of offices, here’s another chapter in the saga. The downtown Santa Cruz office, where I’m starting Monday, was sold. It was built in the 1960s for the Sentinel. I guess now that the presses have been closed and every department has lost so much of its staff, the building is much too big. We don’t know yet where we’re moving, but it’ll happen by October. Everyone’s talking about a place in Scotts Valley, which is just 7 miles away but still a different city. The paper wouldn’t become the Scotts Valley Sentinel, but all the Santa Cruz news would be covered from away. Odd, isn’t it? Can you imagine the Missourian headquartered in Centralia? Not the best way to get the pulse of a city.
