This feature explores the experience of gays who were raised Catholic but left the church because of its stance on homosexuality, and examines a document that had just been issued by Catholic bishops calling for more acceptance. This story earned me a national first place for feature writing in the 2006 Mark of Excellence Awards. doc
In September 2006, I reported from New Orleans with a photographer and TV reporter on the recovery of the city after Hurricane Katrina and the ensuing flood. I kept a blog during the trip, wrote a longer narrative upon my return and coordinated a multimedia package. doc mp3 blog
This story was the first of two on the departure of three long-time priests in Columbia, Mo. and illustrated the current challenges of the Catholic Church in finding a new generation of men willing to enter the priesthood. doc
This is the second half of the series on the changing of Catholic clergy in Columbia, Mo. The story profiles four Dominican friars and their order as they took up two of the town’s parishes. doc
Above the Line
This feature story was delicate to write because I interviewed a teenage girl who had addiction issues and run-ins with the law, but was not allowed to ask many questions about her troubled adolescence. Eventually, I think we struck a balance, avoiding prying without shying away from the story. doc
